Singapore and Malaysia

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Here are the details on my Singapore and Malaysia trip which starts tomorrow! I’m flying into Singapore on the 23rd and spending a few days with Leon (who’s studying at NUS). I’m then going to Malaysia to visit Purdue friends. I’ll take an overnight bus from Singapore to northern Malaysia, then take an overnight train back to Kuala Lumpur for the Malaysian Independence Day. Here’s a Quicktime VR of the sleeper train from Butterworth back to Kuala Lumpur (approx $21 USD). The next morning I’ll take a bus back to Singapore.

First Class
This bus is crazy (see above), check out these features:

Chair
  • only 16 seats on the entire bus
  • personal LCD monitors with on demand movies and video games
  • on board steward (drinks, food, reading material, etc.)
  • massage chair

All for about $25 USD, not bad. I’ll get back to Singapore Thursday afternoon and then fly back to HK the same day. I’ll post details from the trip when I get back.

First beach visit (w/ pics)

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

This afternoon marked my first beach visit in Hong Kong. There’s a bus from campus that goes directly to the Clear Water Bay Beach One and takes about 15 minutes. Apparently there are some beaches that you can walk to from campus, but this one had a bath-house, lifeguards, and shark nets (always useful).  Check out the picture set. This is one of two beaches in Clear Water Bay, so I’m looking forward to visiting the other one soon.

Sushi in Japan

Sushi

I had a short layover in Japan while I waited for my flight to HK, so thought I should find some sushi instead of the standard airport food. Not being a real sushi expert, I decided to order the Narita rolls since I was in Narita. It was definitely the best sushi I’ve had, though I don’t have much to compare it to (not that sushi in Indiana is bad… ;)

First pictures

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

OK, I’ve posted some pictures from my first trip to Hong Kong island yesterday. You can see them by clicking the “Photos” link over to the left. I have a couple pictures of campus (which is really incredible), but I’m waiting for better weather before I take too many. Hopefully the sky will clear up in the next few days.

Made it to HK

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

Well, I made it to Hong Kong Friday night! Everything is great so far. I’ll post pictures and updates soon.

Weather problems?

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

While looking through my program registration papers for this Saturday, I found the following note:

If Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 or above, or Black Rainstorm Warning is hoisted on registration day, registration will be postponed to the next working day; the time and venue will remain unchanged.

Hopefully, this is just a precautionary warning ;)

18 Hours of Airtime

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

Welcome to the first post. I’m leaving for Hong Kong in the morning, so I thought the first entry should be about the trip itself.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Evansville to Detroit
    • 1 hour 25 minutes
  • Detroit to Tokyo
    • 12 hours 55 minutes
  • Tokyo to Hong Kong
    • 4 hours 30 minutes

Including layovers and check-ins, that’s over 24 hours of travel; should be fun! Time to finish packing…
